Cleaning products for home baristas: stock up on the essentials

You've run out of cleaning product: which individual package do you need to replenish? First, consider what you are cleaning. EVO is for coffee oil in the brew group, MFC Powder Eco for milk residue, Renew for limescale, and Grinder Clean for a suitable coffee grinder. Below you can buy individual products and accessories, not a complete maintenance kit.

  • Brew group and coffee oil: Cafetto EVO, 12 sachets of 5 g. Check whether your machine can be cleaned with a blind filter and follow the label. A blind filter is not included.
  • Steam wand or milk system: MFC Powder Eco, 12 sachets of 10 g. Use the method and dosage permitted for your appliance. A damp cloth for the exterior and a cleaning product for milk residue serve different purposes.
  • Limescale: Renew, 4 sachets of 25 g. The package for this option contains four sachets. Compare this quantity if you see a package of six sachets elsewhere. Descaling frequency depends on your machine, water, and usage; four sachets do not automatically mean one year's worth of maintenance.
  • Coffee grinder: Grinder Clean, 3 sachets of 45 g. Check the grinder's manual to see if this product is permitted. It does not replace a brew group cleaner or descaler.

For daily tidying up, there are two brushes and three cloth colours. A cloth set contains two cloths measuring 30 Γ— 30 cm: grey for milk residue, brown for the portafilter, and black for around the machine. The brew group brush reaches coffee residue in the brew group; the wide wooden brush sweeps loose, dry grounds from your workspace. Choose only what is missing or due for replacement.

Replenish what has run out and keep useful tools handy

Refilling is different from buying a whole new cleaning kit. If your cloths and brushes are still usable, you don't need to replace them just because one cleaning agent has run out. Find the package that corresponds to your maintenance task and check how much you still have at home. The four products on this page are sold separately. The number of sachets is not a general maintenance schedule and, without dosing instructions, does not indicate how many cleaning cycles your machine can perform with them.

Coffee oil, milk residue, and limescale require different products. EVO and MFC are therefore not alternative names for the same cleaner. Renew is a descaler; Grinder Clean is intended for a suitable coffee grinder. Always use the current label and the manual of the exact device. Not every machine can be blind-filtered or descaled yourself. A cleaning agent is also not a solution for a malfunction that requires maintenance or repair.

During daily cleaning, keep the cloths separate. The supplier recommends grey for the steam wand, brown for the filter holder, and black for around the machine. Each color choice contains two 30 Γ— 30 cm cloths, made of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide. Wash them at a maximum of 40 Β°C and do not tumble dry. Replace a soiled cloth in time. Compare the tasks further in the barista cloth selection guide.

The two brushes do not do the same thing. The group head brush with measuring scoop is for accessible coffee residue at the group head. The scoop does not replace the dosing instructions on the label. The wide coffee brush with a wooden handle sweeps dry grounds from and around your workspace; this does not automatically clean the inside of a coffee grinder. Use the brush selection guide to choose based on the location of the dirt, or read on about cleaning your coffee grinder.

If you don't know which maintenance task is next, start with the broader espresso machine cleaning selection guide. There you will also find separate digital checklists. A checklist is an explanation and contains no cleaning agent or tools. This page remains focused on refilling physical products, cloths, and brushes. Geert-Jan uses the Barista Essentials tools almost daily in his workshops and helps you understand which tool belongs with which action.

This affiliate choice offers four 25-gram sachets. An offer with six sachets contains a different quantity. So compare the contents and not just the name or box price. Use the product according to the instructions of your own machine.

Collapsible row

No. Coffee oils, milk residue, and limescale are different types of buildup. A descaler is not a substitute for a group head cleaner, and Grinder Clean is not intended to be flushed through an espresso machine. Choose the product designed for the task and your appliance.

Collapsible row

Only if you need them. Each color option consists of two 30 Γ— 30 cm cloths. Keep milk, the filter holder, and the work surface separate. The supplier uses gray, brown, and black for these, respectively. If your current cloths are suitable and still usable, you can continue to use them.

Collapsible row

No. This collection contains individual physical cleaning products, cloths, and brushes. A blind filter is not included and may not fit every machine. You can purchase the digital checklists from the broader cleaning selection guide separately from De Barista Shop; order the affiliate products from Barista Essentials.
