Keep your ground coffee within the rim
Choose a dosing ring that fits your filter basket and your machine, so you can grind more neatly and distribute the coffee more evenly.
β Espresso dosing rings: less mess, more control
A dosing ring helps keep ground coffee in your filter basket while grinding and distributing. You place the ring on your portafilter: the filter holder with the handle used to make espresso. The extra rim gives you more room to work, even when distributing the grounds with a WDT tool. Choose from 51, 53.3, 58, and 58.5 mm, as well as a separate version for Sage Barista Express, Pro, and Touch. Check your exact machine model: both the size and the connection under a built-in grinder determine which ring you need.

From less mess to a set espresso routine
Start with the step where you lose coffee.Does coffee spill next to your filter basket while grinding, or do you keep pushing grounds over the edge while distributing? Place the dosing ring before you start. This gives you more room to work with the ground coffee. Remove the ring before you start tamping: pressing the coffee down with your tamper.
Give every tool a clear purpose. The ring keeps coffee inside the edge. A WDT toolhelps you distribute the grounds with thin needles. With an espresso scaleyou measure how much coffee you use and how much espresso ends up in your cup. Those are different steps; a dosing ring does not take over measuring or adjusting.
Next, learn to understand what you are measuring. If your espresso continues to taste inconsistent, look beyond just the tools. With the modules on espresso extraction and controlyou will work on understanding your extraction. Do you want to start at the beginning? Check out Espresso Under Control, featuring video modules and PDFs that you can apply to your own semi-automatic espresso machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Collapsible row
Choose based on your exact machine model and the corresponding filter basket. The brand name alone is not enough: different sizes and connections can exist within the same brand. The standard dosing rings are available in 51, 53.3, 58, and 58.5 mm. For a Sage Barista Express, Pro, or Touch, there is a separate version for use under the built-in grinder. So, first check which model you have and then compare the suitable version. If you cannot find your model with certainty, have the fit confirmed before you order.
Collapsible row
The separate dosing ring is designed to fit both the portafilter and under the built-in grinder of these models. The wings support the connection under the grinder; the activation tab helps start the grinding process. Therefore, this choice is about more than just the diameter. Do not automatically use the standard ring and the custom version as replacements for each other. The custom dosing ring is not suitable for Sage Impress models. If you have a different Sage, please check first which version is intended for your exact model.
Collapsible row
Remove the dosing ring before tamping your coffee. During grinding and any potential WDT, the ring stays on the filter basket so that the extra rim helps keep the grounds contained. WDT means moving thin needles through the ground coffee to distribute it. Once you are done with that, remove the ring and proceed with tamping. The dosing ring is an aid for preparation; it does not replace your tamper.
Collapsible row
A dosing ring raises the rim of your portafilter basket; a dosing cup catches the ground coffee separately first. With a ring, you work directly at the portafilter itself. With a cup, you transfer the coffee to the filter basket after grinding. Which method is more pleasant depends on how your grinder collects the coffee and how you prefer to work. Choose a ring if you primarily lose coffee over the edge during grinding or distribution. A cup suits a routine in which you collect the grounds separately first and then transfer them.
Collapsible row
Wipe the aluminum dosing ring with a barista cloth or rinse it with water. This removes coffee residue from the ring. Also check the rim that connects to the filter basket to ensure no grounds remain there. You do not need to follow a complicated maintenance routine for this simple cleaning. No dishwasher advice is included here: for any other cleaning method, only use the instructions that come with your specific ring.
