Why this helps make better coffee

While grinding, a mound of coffee builds up in the filter basket. If it rises above the rim, even a slight movement can spill grounds. Stirring the coffee with fine needles can have the same effect: you break up clumps, but also push some coffee over the edge.

This creates a mess and makes it harder to start with the same dose each time. Especially if you weigh your coffee before grinding, you want as much of it as possible to end up in the basket.

The dosing ring adds a raised rim above the filter basket. This gives loose coffee grounds extra room during filling and distribution. Ten magnets help keep the ring in place, provided your basket is compatible.

The aluminium ring rests on the upper rim and, according to Barista Essentials, does not extend into the basket. Remove it after distributing, then tamp the coffee as usual. This way, you use the ring only for the steps where it is helpful.

Who is this suitable for?

Do you use a compatible 58.5 mm filter basket and break up clumps with a WDT tool? That is a tool with thin needles. The raised rim helps keep the coffee in the basket while you work.

You do not need to use extra coffee just because the ring is fitted. Stick to the dose that suits your basket and recipe. The ring provides working space above the basket; it does not make the basket itself bigger.

For whom is this not necessary?

If hardly any coffee spills beside your portafilter and you can already distribute the grounds easily, a dosing ring is not an essential purchase. It would mainly add an extra step.

If you want to fix sour or bitter espresso, you also need to consider the coffee, grind setting and amount of water. This ring helps with preparation; it does not dial in your espresso for you.

  • Compatibility

Barista Essentials lists this 58.5 mm ring for various machines, including models from Rocket, ECM, Gaggia, Ascaso, La Marzocco and Rancilio. Always check the filter basket you use. Not every machine or replacement basket from these brands has the same upper rim.

Place the ring flat on the rim and check that the magnets hold it securely. Also check that there is enough clearance beneath your grinder. A 58 mm tamper does not automatically settle the question: it fits inside the basket, whereas this ring sits on top. For Quick Mill, the supplier lists a separate 58 mm version.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

When choosing, I would focus on what happens while you make coffee. Do grounds end up around the grinder or on the basket rim every time? Then a dosing ring serves a clear purpose. If everything already stays tidy, you are better off focusing on dialing in and tasting your espresso.

My advice:

For me, the benefit of a dosing ring is very practical: you can distribute the grounds more calmly without spilling as much coffee. That is useful when your basket is full and you work with needles. But only buy this 58.5 mm version after checking your basket. A ring that sits correctly on the rim matters more than the brand name on your machine.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

Grind and distribute before tamping the coffee

Usage:

Grind and distribute before tamping the coffee

Geert-Jan's tip:

First weigh the dose of coffee that suits your recipe. Place the ring on the basket, grind and distribute the grounds gently. Lift the ring straight up so you do not drag away the top layer of coffee.

Want to know how much coffee actually made it into the basket? Weigh the portafilter before and after grinding. This shows the difference between your intended dose and the amount you retain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zwarte Barista Essentials doseerring van 58,5 mm met magneten aan de onderzijde

Does this 58.5 mm dosing ring fit my machine?

Check your machine and filter basket together against the Barista Essentials size chart. A machine sold as 58 mm may need a different size dosing ring. This 58.5 mm ring is therefore not a universal choice for all 58 mm machines.

Is this the same size as my tamper?

Not necessarily. A tamper must fit inside the filter basket, whereas this ring sits on the upper rim. So use the dosing ring's size chart and check both your machine and basket. Do not rely solely on the number printed on your tamper.

Can I tamp the coffee while the ring is still on?

Remove the ring after distributing the grounds, then tamp. This leaves room for the tamper and lets you see whether you are tamping level. Always insert the portafilter into the machine without the dosing ring.

Will this ring improve my espresso?

The ring helps prevent coffee spills and gives you room to distribute the grounds. That can make preparation easier. For flavour, fresh coffee, the right grind setting and the coffee-to-water ratio still matter. A ring alone will not fix poorly dialed-in espresso.

How do I keep the dosing ring clean?

Remove loose grounds from the ring with a soft cloth. Wipe away remaining residue with a slightly damp barista cloth and then dry the ring. Also clean its lower edge and the areas around the magnets; avoid abrasive materials.

Spilled coffee beside your portafilter? Use a coffee brush to sweep dry grounds off your work surface.
