Why this helps make better coffee

Loose ground coffee takes up a lot of space. During grinding, a mound forms that can easily spill over the edge when you move the portafilter. Some of your coffee then ends up on the drip tray instead of in your espresso.

That leaves you cleaning up after every cup. If you weigh your beans beforehand, you also cannot be sure how much of that coffee actually remained in the basket.

The ring raises the edge of the filter basket. Its wings and activation tab are designed for use beneath the built-in grinder of the specified machines. That makes it a different choice from a general-purpose round dosing ring.

Once grinding is complete, you can distribute the grounds carefully. Then lift the ring off and use your tamper. The ring therefore does not remain on the portafilter while you brew espresso.

Who is this suitable for?

This ring is particularly useful if you have a compatible Sage machine with a built-in grinder and find yourself sweeping coffee from the drip tray after grinding. It gives loose grounds more room before you tamp.

You use the same portafilter throughout grinding and distribution, avoiding the need to pour grounds from a separate dosing cup. Even when you loosen clumps with fine needles, the raised rim helps keep coffee inside the basket.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not suitable for Impress machines or for a portafilter that does not fit the specified grinder cradle. If you use a separate grinder and hardly spill any coffee, you probably do not need this specialised version.

  • Compatibility

This ring is specifically designed for a portafilter used with a built-in coffee grinder. Its wings provide support beneath the grinder; on a compatible machine, the front tab operates the grinder activation mechanism.

Barista Essentials lists the Sage Barista Express, Barista Pro and Barista Touch. The supplier excludes Impress machines. For a Solis or Breville machine, have the exact model confirmed: the supplier mentions certain models, but that does not make the ring suitable for every machine from those brands.

The supplier's page specifies 54 mm for the machine, while the variant selector says 53.3 mm. Here, these are two designations for the same selected product. Choose based on the machine model and version, not just the number. Check compatibility separately if you use a replacement portafilter.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

My starting point is simple: a tool should solve a problem you can actually identify. If you spill grounds when using the built-in grinder, a compatible ring can be useful. If your main difficulty is flavour, also look at your coffee and grinder settings.

My advice:

For a compatible Sage machine with a built-in grinder, I would choose this ring if grounds regularly spill while filling the basket. Its wings and activation tab make the practical difference here. Do you have an Impress machine or a different portafilter? Do not assume the same ring will fit. Find the correct version first; that avoids buying a ring that does not work beneath your grinder.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Grinding and distribution, before tamping

Geert-Jan's tip:

Want to see how much coffee made it into the basket? Use a coffee scale. Compare the weight before and after grinding. That will show whether the ring reduces spills in your setup.

Make using the ring a regular step: fit it before grinding and remove it before tamping. Set it down in the same clean spot after use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zwarte doseerring met vleugels en activeringstab voor geschikte Sage-filterdragers

Does this ring fit a Sage Impress?

No. Barista Essentials explicitly states that this ring is not compatible with Impress machines. The listed Sage models are the Barista Express, Pro and Touch. Also check compatibility if you use a replacement portafilter.

Why does this ring have both 53.3 mm and 54 mm listed?

The supplier uses 54 mm when describing compatible portafilters and 53.3 mm in the variant selector. Choose this specialised ring based on the machine model and how it fits beneath the grinder. The two measurements do not mean it is interchangeable with a general-purpose ring.

Do I need to remove the ring before tamping?

Yes. Use the ring while grinding and distributing the coffee, then lift it off. Tamp the grounds and insert the portafilter into the machine without the ring.

Will a dosing ring improve the taste of my espresso?

The ring helps you collect and distribute ground coffee. Flavour still depends on factors such as your beans, grind setting and coffee-to-water ratio. It is intended to make preparation tidier, not to replace those decisions.

How do I clean the dosing ring?

Wipe the tool with a slightly damp barista cloth and dry it afterwards. Do not use abrasive cleaners or leave coffee residue around the edges.

Brush any spilled grounds off your worktop with a coffee brush.
