Black 51 mm dosing cup V2 – collect and transfer ground coffee

Black 51 mm dosing cup V2 – collect and transfer ground coffee

Does ground coffee spill beside your portafilter while grinding? This black 51 mm stainless steel dosing cup collects the ground coffee separately first. You then transfer it to a compatible filter basket. This is useful when you grind a measured portion of beans for each cup. Check both the clearance below your grinder and how the cup fits your portafilter.

  • Less coffee spilled beside your filter basket
  • Suitable for many 51 mm machines
  • More convenient single dosing

Why this helps make better coffee

Many home baristas weigh their coffee carefully but still lose ground coffee while grinding or transferring it to the portafilter. This can quickly become messy with compact machines and smaller portafilters.

It may seem minor, but it disrupts your routine. Grounds spilling outside the basket make cleaning harder and make it more difficult to use the same dose each time.

This 51 mm dosing cup collects the ground coffee neatly. Place the portafilter over the cup and turn them over together so the grounds transfer into the basket in a controlled way.

The benefit is repeatability: less spilling, less frustration and a calmer workflow before distributing and tamping.

Work more cleanly and transfer a repeatable dose to your portafilter more easily.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not suitable for Sage, Solis or Breville machines with a 54 mm portafilter, nor for 58 mm/E61 machines. Also not the first purchase to make if you do not yet use a scale or have a fully automatic machine.

  • Compatibility

Barista-Essentials states that the 51mm version is suitable for DeLonghi Dedica, La Specialista, Icona Vintage, SMEG, La Pavoni and Create.

Pay close attention to the size: 51mm is not the same as 54mm or 58mm. If you have a Sage, Solis or Breville, do not blindly choose this version. If you are working with an E61 machine, you will most likely need the 58.5mm variant. If in doubt, measure your portafilter or check the size chart at Barista-Essentials.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

During home workshops and training sessions, Geert-Jan de Baristaman often sees people with compact 51 mm machines trying to work neatly but still losing coffee when transferring it to the portafilter.

My advice:

Not a miracle for flavour, but a practical workflow tool. If it fits your 51 mm machine and you use single dosing seriously, this is a sensible purchase for cleaner, more consistent dosing.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Lightly and gently tap the dosing cup after grinding so that any remaining coffee is better dislodged before you turn it over.

Does this 51 mm dosing cup fit my De’Longhi Dedica?

Barista Essentials lists the 51 mm version as suitable for the DeLonghi Dedica. Always check your portafilter size if you are unsure, especially if your machine has an unusual or modified filter basket.

How do I use this dosing cup in my espresso routine?

Grind your weighed coffee into the dosing cup, place your portafilter squarely over the cup and carefully turn both over together. Then distribute the coffee, tamp and brew your espresso.

When is this dosing cup not the most sensible first choice?

Not if you use a Sage, Solis, Breville, E61 machine or a fully automatic machine. Also not if you do not yet use a scale; learning to weigh and check your measurements is more important than another workflow tool.
