Why this helps make better coffee

You wipe down the steam wand and, a little later, use the same cloth to dry the filter basket. It's an easy habit to fall into, but it can transfer milk residue to the coffee.

A clearly identifiable cloth for your portafilter keeps these tasks separate. In the Barista Essentials color system, brown is intended for the portafilter and filter basket.

The set contains two brown microfiber cloths. You can use one and keep the other clean and ready, so you don't have to continue with a dirty cloth.

At 30 Γ— 30 cm, the cloth can be folded to use a clean section. The loop gives you a convenient place to hang it open to dry after cleaning.

Wipe your portafilter without using the same cloth for milk residue.

Who is this suitable for?

For home baristas who like to make sure their filter basket is clean and dry before grinding. Especially if you also prepare milk drinks, a dedicated color helps you avoid reaching for the wrong cloth.

Also useful when several people share the same coffee station. Agree that the brown cloth is for the portafilter, and keep the spare separate from used cloths.

For whom is this not necessary?

A cloth does not replace thorough cleaning to remove coffee oils or stubborn deposits. It is intended for wiping and drying, not for forcefully scrubbing away old residue.

Do not use the same brown cloth for a dirty worktop or the steam wand in between. The color helps you remember its purpose; it does not mean a brown cloth is automatically clean.

  • Compatibility

You choose this cloth based on the cleaning task, not on your portafilter's diameter. The cloth therefore does not need to fit 51, 54 or 58 mm precisely.

Pay attention to the finish of your equipment, however. Hard particles trapped in a cloth can cause scratches. Remove loose debris first and use a clean cloth on delicate surfaces.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Before grinding fresh coffee into the filter basket, check whether any coffee residue or water droplets remain. This quick check fits naturally between knocking out the puck, cleaning, and refilling.

My advice:

Keep it simple: give each cloth a dedicated task and place. Brown is an easy choice for your portafilter. As soon as the cloth gets dirty, pick up a clean one; continuing with a wet, dirty cloth won't make the job easier.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

After knocking out the used puck and before refilling the filter basket.

Usage:

After knocking out the used puck and before refilling the filter basket.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Keep the clean spare cloth somewhere separate from the cloth hanging by your machine. That way, you can tell at a glance which one to reach for when the first gets dirty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Twee opgevouwen bruine barista-doekjes

How many brown cloths do I get?

This version includes two brown cloths. Each measures 30 Γ— 30 cm and has a hanging loop.

Why use a separate cloth for my portafilter?

This prevents you from using the cloth intended for milk residue on your filter basket. Assign each cloth a specific task and replace it when dirty.

At what temperature can I wash them?

Barista Essentials specifies a maximum of 40 Β°C. Air-dry the cloths afterwards; do not tumble dry.

Can I remove baked-on coffee oils with these cloths?

Not by scrubbing hard. First remove any build-up using the cleaning method recommended for the component. Then use a clean cloth to wipe or dry it.

Is a brown cloth suitable for every filter basket size?

Choose the cloth based on the task, not the size of the basket. Use a clean section of cloth and check that the filter basket is free from coffee residue and water before refilling it.
