    Tamping station

  • Suitable for

According to the supplier, the station fits Barista Essentials portafilters. Original Sage and De’Longhi portafilters generally lack sufficient clearance. A 51, 54 or 58 mm filter basket alone does not determine compatibility: the external shape, spout and available clearance matter.

Folded steel with a non-slip silicone mat

  • Cleaning / Maintenance

Remove loose coffee after use. Gently wipe the station and mat with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry them. Do not use abrasive cleaning products. No dishwasher guidance is provided, so do not assume the station is dishwasher-safe.

Why this helps make better coffee

If your portafilter tilts while tamping, it becomes difficult to press the coffee bed evenly. You are holding, balancing and pressing at the same time, which makes preparation less controlled. A station can improve support, but it cannot fix an unsuitable grind or an inconsistent amount of coffee.

This black station provides a stable support for a compatible portafilter. It is made from folded steel with a non-slip silicone mat. You can rest your tamper on top and possibly store filter baskets beneath the station. The aim is a more comfortable, repeatable process: first distribute the ground coffee evenly, then tamp with a straight wrist.

More stability when tamping, without suggesting that an accessory will automatically improve your espresso.

Who is this suitable for?

A sensible choice if you use a semi-automatic espresso machine and currently struggle to keep your portafilter stable. Particularly useful if you want to practise tamping straight down and establish a fixed preparation area. Check the shape and clearance beneath your portafilter first; the filter-basket diameter alone is not enough.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not the first accessory to buy if you can already tamp steadily on a suitable tamping mat. Nor will it solve stale coffee beans, unsuitable grind size or inconsistent dosing. According to Barista Essentials, original Sage and De’Longhi portafilters usually lack sufficient clearance beneath the spout. Do not buy the station based on the brand name alone.

  • Compatibility

The station supports the portafilter during preparation; it is not connected to the machine. There must be clearance between the spout and the underside of the portafilter. Barista Essentials states that its own portafilters fit in all sizes. This is not a universal guarantee for other brands: if unsure, have the exact portafilter and spout clearance checked.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

At De Barista Shop, Geert-Jan de Baristaman helps you choose tools based on the action you want to improve. With a tamping station, start with two questions: is the portafilter stable, and can you tamp straight down comfortably? Checking this is more useful than simply pressing harder.

My advice:

Choose this station if supporting your portafilter is the problem and you have confirmed that it fits. Keep your dose and distribution consistent in the meantime. If your espresso still varies significantly, return to the extraction basics: how much coffee goes in, how much espresso comes out and how long it takes.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

After distributing the ground coffee, before locking the portafilter into the machine.

Usage:

After distributing the ground coffee, before locking the portafilter into the machine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Follow the same sequence for every shot. Weigh your coffee, distribute the grounds, tamp straight and check the rim. When dialing in, change one variable at a time. This makes it easier to see whether your adjustment actually helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zwart Barista Essentials tamping station met uitsparing en ronde tamperplek op lichte achtergrond

Where can I order the black tamping station?

The button takes you to the black version at Barista Essentials, where you complete your purchase. Barista Essentials handles payment, delivery, returns and any applicable right of withdrawal under its current terms. Check the price and availability there before ordering.

Do I pay extra when using De Barista Shop's link?

No. De Barista Shop may earn a commission when you order through the link; you pay nothing extra. Current prices and terms are available at Barista Essentials.

Will my original Sage or De’Longhi portafilter fit?

According to Barista Essentials, original Sage and De’Longhi portafilters usually have too little clearance between the spout and the underside. Do not assume they will fit. Have your exact portafilter checked before ordering. The supplier does state that its own Barista Essentials portafilters fit in all sizes.

How do I use a tamping station to tamp straight?

First check that the portafilter is supported level and securely. Then distribute the grounds and hold your tamper straight above the coffee bed. Press down in a controlled motion without moving sideways. The station supports your portafilter, but it does not automatically correct your posture or distribution.

When should I improve something else first?

If you can already tamp steadily, or if your dose, bean freshness and grind size still vary significantly. Start with a consistent routine and learn to monitor your extraction. A tamping station provides support; it is not essential for good espresso.
