Why this helps make better coffee

You grind coffee into the filter basket and get a mound in the middle. You want to level it neatly before tamping, but a separate distributor and tamper take up even more space next to your machine.

With this combination, you keep the two steps together. This is especially convenient if you want to establish a simple routine in a small coffee area.

On one side are surfaces that level the top of the coffee. On the other side is the surface with which you press down on the coffee. First you use the distributor; then you turn the tool around and tamp.

You adjust the depth of the two sides separately. This determines how far the working surfaces extend into the filter basket. The number on a depth setting does not tell you how much force you are applying.

First spread evenly and then tamp down with the same tool.

Who is this suitable for?

For a beginner home barista with a suitable 51 mm portafilter who would like to distribute and tamp with a single tool. The supplier mentions the DeLonghi Dedica and the Solis Grind & Infuse Compact, for example.

Do you usually use the same portafilter and the same amount of coffee? Then you can adjust the setting accordingly. This makes it easier to repeat your preparation in the same way next time.

For whom is this not necessary?

If you already have a good tamper and can distribute the coffee without extra help, you don't need to add this combination. The main advantages are the workflow and the space you save.

For a different size filter basket, 51 mm is not a safe bet. And if there are still clumps in the coffee after grinding, break them up first; simply smoothing the top does not distribute the coffee deeper in the basket by itself.

  • Compatibility

Look at the filter basket you actually use to make coffee. Are you still using the original basket that came with your Dedica, or have you ever replaced it? That change could be more important than the brand name on the machine.

The tool needs to fit straight into the basket and come back up easily. It shouldn't get stuck against the inner wall. Also check that the tamping surface reaches the coffee at your dose before the edge of the tool rests on the basket.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Before distributing, take a look in your filter basket. If all the coffee is on one side, distribute it evenly across the basket first. A smooth start makes the next steps easier.

My advice:

Start with a fixed amount of coffee and carefully adjust the doser and tamper one by one. This way, it becomes a tool that takes the work out of your hands. If you continue to use more coffee at the same time and grind it finer, it will become harder to understand which change makes a difference.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

After grinding: distribute, flip and tamp.

Usage:

After grinding: distribute, flip and tamp.

Geert-Jan's tip:

After use, place the tool in a clean area. Otherwise, coffee grounds from the side you just used could end up on the other working surface or your countertop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zwarte 51 mm tamper en verdeler met RVS werkvlakken

Does this version fit the DeLonghi Dedica?

Barista Essentials rates the DeLonghi Dedica at 51 mm. If you use a replacement filter holder, also check the size of that holder.

What does one side do and what does the other side do?

The leveling side flattens the top of the coffee. With the other side, you press the coffee down. You use them one after the other.

Do I need to change the depth for every espresso?

Not if you use the same scoop and the same dose and the setting is correct. Check the setting again if you switch to a different amount of coffee or a different scoop.

What does the maximum tamping depth of 14 mm mean?

That is the maximum setting specified by the supplier. The goal is not always to tamp as deeply as possible; the appropriate setting depends on your basket and dose.

What do I use to clean the tool?

Remove loose coffee with a soft coffee brush. For coffee oil, use a slightly damp barista cloth. Dry the edges and both work surfaces afterwards.
