Why this helps make better coffee

Grinding can generate static electricity. This can make ground coffee stick to surfaces or scatter beside your collection cup. It is especially inconvenient when you weigh out a portion of beans for each drink: you want to collect your dose neatly and keep your worktop clean.

RDT stands for Ross Droplet Technique: you very lightly moisten a weighed portion of coffee beans before grinding. This spray bottle helps distribute water as a fine mist. That can reduce static cling; the difference you notice depends on your beans, grinder and surroundings, among other factors. It does not solve every cause of coffee retention in a grinder.

A small step that can help you collect your weighed coffee more neatly.

Who is this suitable for?

For home baristas who weigh out one portion of beans at a time and experience static cling during grinding. Use the bottle on loose beans in a tray outside the grinder. The compact reservoir is refillable; the holder protects the glass during normal use.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not a logical first purchase if static coffee is rarely a problem. Do not use this method with a bean-to-cup machine, a filled bean hopper or a grinder whose manufacturer advises against moist beans. For inconsistent flavour, fresh beans, a suitable grind size and consistent dosing remain more important starting points.

  • Compatibility

The spray does not need to fit your machine or portafilter. Whether you can use RDT depends on your grinder's instructions. A description such as universal does not prove that every grinder or bean-to-cup machine can handle lightly moistened beans.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

This buying guidance is based on the product specifications and how RDT is used. It does not claim that Geert-Jan de Baristaman has personally tested this particular bottle.

My advice:

Geert-Jan de Baristaman's advice: choose this spray if static cling is a specific problem in your single-dosing routine. Keep your dose and grind size consistent at first so you can assess whether this extra step helps. Do not expect guaranteed better espresso: the bottle mainly supports bean preparation.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

After weighing your beans, before grinding

Usage:

After weighing your beans, before grinding

Geert-Jan's tip:

A wide tray helps distribute the mist over the beans. The Coffee Dosing Tray is a suitable addition. Keep your recipe and method consistent when assessing the effect on static cling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I order this product?

The button takes you to Barista Essentials. You place and pay for your order there; Barista Essentials also handles delivery, returns and withdrawal rights. Check the current price, availability and terms with the seller.

Do I pay extra when using De Barista Shop's link?

No. De Barista Shop may receive a commission when you order through our link. This does not cost you anything extra.

Can I use the RDT Spray with any coffee grinder?

Not necessarily. Check your grinder manufacturer's instructions. The bottle size does not impose any portafilter requirements, but that does not make the technique suitable for every machine. Use RDT only if lightly moistened beans are permitted.

How do I use the RDT Spray without adding too much water?

Apply only a very light mist to a weighed portion of loose beans, outside the grinder. Shake the beans to distribute the moisture and grind immediately. The beans should not be dripping wet. Always follow your grinder manufacturer's instructions.

When is an RDT Spray not the best first choice?

When you have no problem with static cling or your grinder does not allow lightly moistened beans. If your espresso results vary, start with fresh beans, dosing and grind size. This spray is not a substitute for those fundamentals.
