Why this helps make better coffee

You've got the hang of making espresso by now, but you want to experiment more with different beans. For example, you might wonder what happens if you grind finer. The filter basket affects how water flows through the ground coffee and is therefore part of your recipe.

Changing baskets therefore means starting your adjustments from scratch. The same weight of coffee and grind size will not automatically give you the same extraction time or flavor as they did with your old basket.

This version has two layers, with a built-in 0.18 mm filter. Barista Essentials positions this basket as the more accessible precision version: you can experiment with finer grinds, with slightly less sensitivity than the single-layer version.

More extraction means that more substances dissolve from the coffee. That is not an automatic promise of tastier espresso. Taste your result and adjust your recipe to what you want to change in the cup.

Who is this suitable for?

For the home barista who wants to take the step towards a precision basket and is looking for a less sensitive version. The supplier also mentions the two-layer version as an interesting choice when using a built-in Sage grinder.

Interesting to compare with medium or light roasted beans. Even then, the coffee itself, the grind, and your preparation determine how the espresso ultimately tastes.

For whom is this not necessary?

Are you still working on consistently making your first espresso? Then a well-fitting standard basket is often enough. Get to know your grinder and recipe first before adding an extra variable.

This is not a solution for old beans, large clumps in your grind, or a crookedly tamped puck. If you can barely set your grinder any finer, you may get little out of this upgrade.

  • Compatibility

Barista Essentials lists the following for the 51 mm version: De’Longhi Dedica, La Specialista and Solis Grind & Infuse Compact. Always check the full model name and your own filter holder, especially if you have ever replaced it.

The nominal size is an initial selection, not a complete fit test. The rim must fit properly into your filter holder and there must be enough space left under the basket. The supplier does not publish a confirmed external height here; have any questionable combination checked before ordering.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

Compare a new batch with your trusted recipe and the same beans. Briefly note the dosage, yield, and time. A change in brewing time is a sign to take another look; the taste determines whether you want to keep the adjustment.

My advice:

My advice: choose two layers if you want to experiment with a precision basket, but still find the more sensitive single-dose version one step too far. Do expect that you will need to readjust the grinder.

Keep the dose the same while adjusting. Then choose an espresso yield, measure the extraction time, and taste. Only then adjust one setting. This way, it remains clear what you have changed.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

Before brewing: dose, distribute evenly and tamp level

Geert-Jan's tip:

Use a coffee scale with a timer to track dose and yield. If you see clumps in the grounds, break them up before tamping with a WDT tool. A tamping mat gives you a stable surface to support the portafilter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Onderzijde van het 51 mm 2-laags RVS precisiefilterbakje

What is the difference between one and two layers?

The single-layer version has laser-cut holes in a spiral pattern and, according to the supplier, requires greater precision. The double-layer version has an additional built-in 0.18 mm filter and is positioned as being more accessible. Both are intended for experimenting with your extraction.

How much coffee do I use in this pod?

The supplier recommends 17–19 grams for a double espresso. Choose a starting dose within that range and check the space above the coffee. The exact amount also depends on your beans and the combination with your machine.

Does every 51 mm accessory fit this?

No. Check accessories for their specific function and actual compatibility. A tamper must fit the inner dimensions of the filter basket; a dosing ring, on the other hand, rests on the top rim. The nominal machine size is not sufficient to select every accessory.

Do I need to readjust my mill?

Yes, expect to have to readjust. Start with a fixed dose, measure the yield and time, and taste. Then make small adjustments, finer or coarser. Do not simply copy the setting from another cup without checking.

How do I clean the filter compartment?

Rinse away coffee grounds after use and dry the tray with a clean barista cloth. Check the underside and the holes. Do not use sharp objects to enlarge the openings. For a thorough cleaning, follow the instructions for your machine and the cleaning agent.
