Why this helps make better coffee

After grinding, the coffee often sits higher on one side of the basket than the other. You want to level the top and then tamp, but two separate tools take up space and clutter the worktop.

A combination tool brings those steps together. It is still important to understand what each side does: the distributor levels the surface, while the flat tamper side compresses the coffee.

First, use the distribution side to make the surface of the grounds more even. Then turn the tool over and use the flat tamping base. The depth is adjustable.

A fixed depth can help you repeat the same movement, provided your coffee dose remains the same. It does not measure pressure or check whether clumps remain beneath the surface.

A clear sequence for distributing and tamping

Who is this suitable for?

For a compact coffee station where you want to use both a distribution tool and a tamper. Turn the tool over for the next step and you have fewer separate items to set down.

The main benefit is a tidier, repeatable routine with a consistent recipe. If you often change baskets or coffee doses, remember that you will need to reassess the depth setting.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not necessary if you prefer a separate hand tamper or are already happy with your existing tools. Also, do not assume that a smooth surface proves the coffee beneath it has been distributed without clumps.

  • Compatibility

Barista Essentials lists the 58 mm combination for Quick Mill. Check your filter basket's internal diameter before ordering. For many E61 machines and other brands, the supplier points to a separate 58.5 mm version.

Depth matters as well as diameter. The tamper side must reach the coffee before the top of the tool rests against the basket rim. The supplier specifies a maximum tamping depth of 14 mm.

Using a different basket or coffee dose may mean adjusting the setting again. This tool is therefore most convenient if you usually work with the same basket and recipe.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

With this tool, I first look at the size and ease of use. Can you make a controlled, repeatable movement with it? If so, you have a useful foundation for dialling in and tasting your espresso.

My advice:

This combination makes sense if you want to use both functions and have fewer separate tools on your worktop. Take a moment to adjust it for your own dose. If you change recipes frequently, a separate hand tamper may be simpler than continually readjusting the depth.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Keep your coffee dose consistent with a coffee scale. That makes it easier to judge how a change in grind setting affects the flavour.

Support the portafilter on a tamping mat. This helps you tamp in a controlled way and protects the worktop. Make sure the portafilter cannot tip over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zwarte tamper en koffieverdeler met twee RVS zijden

Does this 58 mm version fit every 58 mm machine?

No. Barista Essentials lists 58 mm for Quick Mill and offers a 58.5 mm version for various other machines. Always check the filter basket you actually use.

How deep should I set the tamper?

That depends on your basket and coffee dose. Adjust the tool using your usual dose and check that the tamper side actually compresses the grounds. The supplier specifies a maximum tamping depth of 14 mm.

Does the distributor also replace a tool with needles?

Not always. A distribution tool mainly evens out the surface of the ground coffee. The fine needles of a WDT tool can also break up clumps deeper in the grounds. A level surface does not tell you everything about the distribution underneath.

Do I need to readjust it when I use less coffee?

Check the depth setting again whenever you change the dose. Less coffee sits lower in the basket, so a previously chosen setting will not have the same effect.

How do I clean this tool?

Clean both stainless steel surfaces and any accessible edges with a slightly damp barista cloth. Dry the tool afterwards and remove coffee residue before adjusting the depth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Brush any spilled grounds off your worktop with a coffee brush.
