Why this helps make better coffee

Using one cloth for the steam wand, portafilter and countertop transfers residue from one area to another. Assigning a specific colour to each task helps you clean more deliberately. Colour alone does not make a cloth clean: washing, timely replacement and thorough drying are still necessary.

The set contains six microfibre cloths in grey, brown and black. The supplier assigns grey to the steam wand, brown to the portafilter and black to the machine and surrounding area. Each 30 Γ— 30 cm cloth has a hanging loop, giving it a fixed task and place. This makes cleaning up between coffee sessions easier to organise.

Clearer separation of tasks when removing milk and coffee residue.

Who is this suitable for?

For home baristas who make espresso and milk drinks and want separate cloths for different components. A set is useful when you need clean cloths available while others are being washed. Agree on the same colour assignments if several people use the machine.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not a replacement for machine maintenance or cleaning products. A cloth removes visible residue but does not descale internal pipes or clean the inside of the brew group. If you already have enough suitable, clean cloths with assigned tasks, another set is not your most essential purchase.

  • Compatibility

Suitable for use around the machine, steam wand and portafilter according to your machine's cleaning instructions. No machine-specific connection is needed. Take care around hot parts and follow the manual when cleaning delicate surfaces.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

At De Barista Shop, Geert-Jan de Baristaman helps you make cleaning a consistent habit. The most important decision is which cloth to use for each task and when to pick up a clean one. Colours are a reminder, not an automatic guarantee of hygiene.

My advice:

Choose this set if you want a clear separation between cloths for milk, coffee and countertops. Prepare the right cloth before you begin, replace dirty ones and let washed cloths dry thoroughly. A clean exterior is only the beginning; internal machine maintenance remains a separate task.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

While making coffee and immediately after using the steam wand, portafilter and countertop.

Usage:

While making coffee and immediately after using the steam wand, portafilter and countertop.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Hang cloths up so they can dry and keep clean ones separate. Make washing part of your routine. Do not use a cloth with milk residue on a filter basket or countertop afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I order the set of six barista cloths?

The button takes you to the set at Barista Essentials. You pay there, and they handle delivery, returns and any applicable right of withdrawal under their current terms. Check the current price and availability there too.

Do I pay extra when using the affiliate link?

No. Geert-Jan de Baristaman may receive a commission through the link; you pay nothing extra. You order from Barista Essentials.

Which colour should I use for each task?

The supplier assigns grey to the steam wand, brown to the portafilter and black to the machine and countertop. Keep these tasks separate. Colour alone does not prevent contamination: use a clean cloth and replace it when necessary.

How should I wash the cloths?

According to the supplier, wash at a maximum of 40 Β°C and do not tumble dry. Allow the cloths to dry before storing them. Do not use a visibly dirty cloth to wipe another component.

Do the cloths replace maintenance of my machine?

No. They help remove visible residue but do not replace cleaning the brew group or steam wand, or descaling. Follow your machine's manual for internal maintenance; a fixed schedule or backflushing recommendation does not apply to every machine.
