Why this helps make better coffee

You have a separate coffee grinder, but there is little room left next to the machine for a separate knock box. After every shot, you take the used coffee puck to the waste bin. A drawer can combine two functions in the same space: a support surface for a suitable grinder and a collection area for coffee grounds underneath.

This large silver stainless steel knock box drawer combines a place for your loose grinder with a tray for used coffee pucks. Pull the drawer out, gently tap the filter holder on the padded bar, and slide it back in. This keeps your coffee waste right where you make your coffee.

The top plate has ventilation holes. These allow air to pass through, but do not replace cleaning. Empty the drawer after your coffee break and also keep the guide free of ground coffee. Measure the grinder and the space needed to pull the drawer open beforehand.

Who is this suitable for?

For those who have a standalone bean grinder and are looking for a larger drawer than the small version measuring 28 Γ— 18 Γ— 6 cm. This silver drawer measures 31 Γ— 22 Γ— 8.8 cm. It is especially useful if the grinder can fit entirely on top of it and you prefer not to place a separate knock box next to the machine.

For whom is this not necessary?

Do you have limited vertical space or a small grinder that already fits in the compact drawer? Then the smaller version may be more practical. With an espresso machine with a built-in grinder, a separate knock box is often simpler. This drawer is not a base for a complete espresso machine.

  • Compatibility

The drawer does not connect to the espresso machine. Check the dimensions and support points of your own coffee grinder. The supplier lists the Sage Smart Grinder Pro, Eureka Mignon, and Niche, among others, as examples; this is not proof that every model or setup will fit. Do not use the drawer as an arbitrary riser for an entire machine.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

At De Barista Shop, Geert-Jan the Barista first looks at how your workspace is used. A drawer can be handy under a suitable standalone grinder. Measure before ordering; a difference of a few centimeters can determine whether tidying up is easy or requires an extra step.

My advice:

First, measure where the feet of your grinder will sit. They must all rest securely on the top plate. Then check whether you can still dose comfortably with the higher setup and whether the drawer can open freely. If everything is correct, you can collect your coffee waste under the grinder and keep the space next to your machine clear.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

After tamping, before dosing coffee again.

Usage:

After tamping, before dosing coffee again.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Brush away dry coffee grounds from around the drawer with a coffee brush. Empty the drawer at the end of your coffee round and let the cleaned parts dry. Keep the guide free of coffee residue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Grote zilveren uitkloplade met ventilatiegaten en uitneembare opvanglade

Will my coffee grinder fit in this drawer?

Measure the footprint of your mill and check where the feet are positioned. All support points must rest securely on the top plate. Also check the overall height and the space needed to open the drawer at the front.

Can the drawer go in the dishwasher?

Barista Essentials states that all parts of this drawer are dishwasher-safe. First, remove any coffee residue, allow the parts to dry, and properly replace the lined rod.

How often should I empty the drawer?

Empty the drawer at the end of your coffee cycle or at least daily. Even with ventilation holes, you don't want to leave damp coffee sitting for extended periods. Clean the drawer and let it dry.

What if I have a machine with a built-in grinder?

A drawer under a standalone mill is therefore less obvious. First, check whether you have a suitable, stable location. A separate collection bin next to the machine is often simpler than placing your entire machine on a small drawer.

Are the coffee grinder and the brush included?

No. You get one small tamp mat with a tamper. The coffee grinder, brush, filter holder and espresso machine in the lifestyle photos are not included.
