Adjustable mirror for observing espresso extraction

  • Suitable for

For observing the underside of a bottomless portafilter. No connection to a particular filter diameter is required. You still need a suitable position and an unobstructed line of sight; the absence of a size-specific fitting does not guarantee a practical fit with every machine setup.

The design can be disassembled. Barista Essentials does not specify a cleaning method or dishwasher suitability. Allow the mirror and surrounding area to cool, and follow the supplied care instructions.

Why this helps make better coffee

A bottomless portafilter lets you see where espresso emerges from the underside of the filter basket. This can be hard to follow if you have to crouch beside the machine. Your attention then shifts away from the scale and preparation while you search for a good viewing angle.

This mirror redirects your view of the underside of the filter basket to an easier viewing angle. Adjust the reflection with the ball joint; the magnetic base holds the mirror on a suitable surface. An even flow or spurting becomes easier to see. The mirror itself does not change your grind, distribution or tamp.

Observe your espresso flow more easily, without promising that it will automatically taste better.

Who is this suitable for?

For home baristas who use a bottomless portafilter and want to compare what happens during extraction. Particularly useful when the underside of the basket is difficult to see from your normal working position. You still need a stable spot for the mirror, an unobstructed view and room for your cup or scale.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not an essential first tool if you are not yet measuring a consistent dose or are mainly trying to find the right grind size. With a closed-bottom spouted portafilter, the mirror cannot show you directly through the filter basket. A visually attractive flow is also not a complete assessment of taste.

  • Compatibility

The mirror is not mounted in the group head. Check the available space on your drip tray, the position of your bottomless portafilter and where your cup and scale sit. The base is magnetic. Barista Essentials includes two metal stickers for non-magnetic surfaces; first check whether your machine manufacturer permits attaching them to that surface.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

This guidance describes the function of an extraction mirror and is based on the product specifications. It does not claim that Geert-Jan de Baristaman has personally tested this particular mirror.

My advice:

Geert-Jan de Baristaman's advice: use a shot mirror as an observation aid when you already work with a bottomless portafilter. Record your coffee dose, espresso yield and taste impression at the same time. Do not immediately change several settings because of one uneven-looking extraction. The goal is to understand what your brewing process does, not just to make an attractive video.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

During brewing: watch the underside of your bottomless portafilter

Usage:

Geert-Jan's tip:

Use the same recipe when comparing what you see. If espresso clearly appears earlier on one side, also consider the distribution of ground coffee and whether you tamp level. The mirror helps you observe; it cannot identify a single cause on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Espresso shot mirror van 60 mm op een magnetische voet

Where can I order this product?

The button takes you to Barista Essentials, where you place and pay for your order. Barista Essentials also handles delivery, returns and the right of withdrawal under its current terms. Check the current price and availability there.

Do I pay extra when using De Barista Shop's link?

No. De Barista Shop may receive a commission when you order through our link. This does not cost you anything extra.

Does a shot mirror work with a regular spouted portafilter?

You can see the flow from the spouts, but you cannot see the underside of the filter basket through a closed portafilter. To observe extraction directly beneath the basket, you need a bottomless portafilter.

How do I attach and position the mirror?

Use a suitable magnetic surface or, if your machine manufacturer permits it, one of the supplied metal stickers. Adjust the ball joint before extraction. Make sure the mirror, cup and scale do not interfere with one another.

Will this mirror make my espresso better?

The mirror does not change how you brew. It helps you see what is happening. Consider that view alongside your measured dose, espresso yield and taste; an attractive stream does not guarantee a good cup of coffee.
