Why this helps make better coffee

During grinding, the coffee rises above the rim of the filter basket. Even a small movement causes some to spill. When breaking up clumps with a needle, it is also easy to push coffee over the edge.

A dosing ring temporarily provides more space above the basket. You determine which one you need by looking at the top rim of the filter basket and the space beneath the grinder. The number on your tamper does not always provide the right answer for this.

The aluminium ring sits on the top rim. Ten magnets help keep it there if your filter basket is suitable. It increases the working space when filling and distributing, not the coffee dose that belongs in the basket.

After distributing, you remove the ring and tamp the coffee. So it does not stay on the filter holder during coffee making. Use it only for the tasks where coffee falls beside you.

Easier to fill and dispense, with less coffee next to the pod

Who is this suitable for?

For those who regularly spill coffee while grinding or distributing. A higher rim can be particularly useful when dealing with a full dose of loose grounds. This size guide helps you choose from four ring sizes; afterwards, check the version you wish to order.

The same machine size does not always mean the same ring size. A tamper fits inside the basket, while the ring sits on the top rim. Therefore, look at the component you actually use.

For whom is this not necessary?

If your work surface is already tidy and you can distribute the coffee evenly, a ring is not necessary. It is also not a solution in itself for sour or bitter espresso: in that case, look at your beans, grind and recipe.

For various Sage and Solis machines with a built-in grinder, Barista Essentials offers a separate ring. Do not automatically choose this general-purpose version just because the size seems to match.

  • Compatibility

Barista Essentials 51 mm fits, among others, De’Longhi Dedica and La Specialista. For Sage Bambino (Plus), Duo-Temp Pro and various Solis models, the supplier lists 53.3 mm. Quick Mill is 58 mm; many E61 systems are 58.5 mm.

Check your exact model and the filter basket, especially after replacing the portafilter. The ring must lie flat and the magnets must engage. Also check that your portafilter with ring still fits under the grinder spout.

This page compares the sizes. The link button deliberately opens the black 51 mm version. Choose a different size on the supplier page if it matches your basket; also check the colour before ordering.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

If I were Geert-Jan the Baristaman, I would ask one practical question: which task becomes easier with this? You want to spend less time cleaning up coffee and be able to keep working with the same dose. You choose a ring for that convenience; adjusting and tasting your espresso remains a separate step.

My advice:

My advice: first, see where the mess is coming from. If it happens when grinding or breaking up clumps, then a ring can be a useful little help. If your container is already filled cleanly, then you don't need to add an extra step.

When choosing the size, take both your filter container and the grinder into account. A ring that fits nicely on the container but does not fit under the spout will not make your routine easier.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

Grind and distribute before tamping the coffee

Usage:

Grind and distribute before tamping the coffee

Geert-Jan's tip:

First, weigh out the amount of coffee required by your recipe. Place the ring on the container, grind, and gently level the coffee. Remove the ring straight up so that you do not drag the top layer of coffee with it.

Want to know how much coffee actually ended up in the container? Then weigh the filter holder before and after grinding. This will show you the difference between the amount you want to use and the amount you have left.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zwarte Barista-Essentials doseerring voor espresso portafilter met magnetische pasvorm tegen knoeien tijdens puck prep

Why isn't my tamper size always the right ring size?

The tamper fits inside the basket. The dosing ring sits on the top rim. Because of this, the two parts may require different sizes. Compare the ring with your own filter basket and the supplier's size chart.

Which version opens the link button?

The button opens the 51 mm dosing ring in black. This page also provides sizing advice for the other versions. When ordering from the supplier, carefully choose the size and color that suit your machine and filter holder.

Does the ring fit under a built-in coffee grinder?

That depends on the model and the available space. For various Sage and Solis machines with a built-in grinder, Barista Essentials refers you to a separate ring. A matching diameter alone is not a sufficient check.

Will my espresso taste better with this ring?

The ring helps you spill less coffee and provides space to distribute the coffee. This can make preparation more pleasant. For the taste, fresh coffee, the right grind, and the ratio between coffee and water remain important, among other things. A ring alone does not make a poorly adjusted espresso good.

How do I keep the dosing ring clean?

Remove loose coffee from the ring with a soft cloth. Wipe away any remaining residue with a slightly damp barista cloth and then dry the ring. Also clean the bottom edge and the areas around the magnets; do not use abrasive materials.

Spilled coffee next to your portafilter? Use a coffee brush to sweep dry grounds off your work surface.
