Why this helps make better coffee

You have a 54 mm naked portafilter and want to discover more than just a different grind size. A different filter basket can give you a new starting point. This convex design changes the shape in which the coffee bed lies, requiring you to re-evaluate your familiar settings.

The basket tapers from 54 mm at the top to 32 mm at the bottom. The supplier describes this shape as a way to build up extra resistance. This means you cannot simply use the same grind and dose as you did with your old basket.

Assess the change in your own cup. A nice-looking flow is interesting to watch, but it doesn't tell you everything about the taste. By using fixed amounts of coffee and espresso, you can more effectively compare how the new shape affects your beans.

Who is this suitable for?

For those who already use a suitable 54 mm naked portafilter and want to deliberately experiment with the brewing process. Barista Essentials recommends this method primarily for light and medium roasts, although it can also be used for dark roasts. Do not expect a consistent flavor profile.

You will get the most out of this method if you already track the dose, espresso yield, and brewing time. Otherwise, you will change too many variables at once, making it difficult to see which adjustment made the difference.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not suitable for a bottomless portafilter: due to its depth, the supplier recommends a bottomless portafilter. The basket is 33 mm deep and must actually fit inside your bottomless portafilter.

If you are still looking for a consistent foundation for your espresso, stick with one basket for now. Fresh coffee, a suitable grind, and a repeatable recipe will give you more consistency than changing a component every time.

  • Compatibility

For the 54 mm version, Barista Essentials lists the Sage Barista Express, Express Impress, Touch, Touch Impress and Pro, as well as the Solis Grind & Infuse Pro, Barista Pro and Perfetta Plus, among others. Also check the naked filter holder itself; a machine listing is not proof that every replacement holder is the same.

In addition to the top diameter, also check the 33 mm depth and how the basket fits into your holder. The supplier states a dosing range of 16–18 grams. Also adjust the final dose based on your beans and the clearance under the shower screen; do not force the filter holder.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

If Geert-Jan the Barista were here, he wouldn't just look at the stream under the portafilter. Taste the espresso too and note what you changed. This way you can repeat an adjustment later and decide if this portafilter suits your coffee.

My advice:

My advice: first check whether your 54 mm naked portafilter has enough room. Only then is the question of what this puck screen does for your espresso interesting. Keep your first comparison simple, using the same coffee and a fixed starting amount.

Are you happy with your current espresso and mainly want to brew coffee without any extra adjustments? Then you don't need to switch. This is a tool for experimentation, not a mandatory upgrade.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Keep your old filter pod and write down the recipe that goes with it. This way, you can switch back and make a fair comparison without losing your baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

RVS convex filterbakje van 54 mm met taps toelopende binnenkant

Does this 54 mm basket fit in a standard bottomless portafilter?

No. Due to the depth, the supplier recommends a naked portafilter. Also check whether your open portafilter can accommodate the shape and depth of this basket.

How much coffee do I use as a starting point?

Barista Essentials recommends 16–18 grams for this model. Choose a suitable dose within that range for your beans and keep it consistent while dialling in. Also check the space up to the shower screen.

Do I need to buy a different tamper?

The supplier describes this design as compatible with existing suitable tools, unlike certain step-down cups. However, check that your tamper moves freely and straight in this cup; do not force anything based solely on the nominal size.

Does the convex shape naturally make my espresso sweeter?

That is not a guaranteed result. The supplier describes experiences with this baking pan, but your beans, grind, and recipe will continue to play a role. Taste and compare it with your old pan to determine what you prefer.

How do I keep the holes clean?

Rinse away coffee grounds after use and let the pod dry. If necessary, use a soft barista cloth for the outside. Do not poke sharp objects into the holes; follow the supplier instructions for additional cleaning.
