    Tamping station

  • Suitable for

According to the supplier, the station fits Barista Essentials portafilters. Original Sage and De’Longhi portafilters generally lack sufficient clearance. A 51, 54 or 58 mm filter basket alone does not determine compatibility: the external shape, spout and available clearance matter.

  • Material / finish

Folded steel with a non-slip silicone mat

  • Cleaning / Maintenance

Remove loose coffee after use. Gently wipe the station and mat with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry them. Do not use abrasive cleaning products. No dishwasher guidance is provided, so do not assume the station is dishwasher-safe.

One silver tamping station with a non-slip silicone mat. The portafilter, tamper, filter baskets and espresso machine shown in usage photos are not included.

Why this helps make better coffee

You distribute your coffee carefully, but while tamping you have to balance the portafilter on the countertop. This makes tamping straight down unnecessarily awkward. A suitable support can make the process more stable. If your shots still vary despite stable tamping, also look at dose, grind size and bean freshness.

The silver version combines folded steel with a black non-slip silicone mat. A compatible portafilter rests in the recess while you tamp the grounds. There is a place for your tamper on top, and you may be able to store filter baskets beneath the station. This gives your preparation a dedicated place without needing a large workstation.

More stability when tamping, without suggesting that an accessory will automatically improve your espresso.

Who is this suitable for?

For anyone looking for a silver-coloured support who notices their portafilter tilting while tamping. The compact station can also provide a dedicated place for your tamper. The colour is a choice for your coffee corner; compatibility and support determine whether this tool is useful in your routine.

For whom is this not necessary?

Not the first accessory to buy if you can already tamp steadily on a suitable tamping mat. Nor will it solve stale coffee beans, unsuitable grind size or inconsistent dosing. According to Barista Essentials, original Sage and De’Longhi portafilters usually lack sufficient clearance beneath the spout. Do not buy the station based on the brand name alone.

  • Compatibility

The station supports the portafilter during preparation; it is not connected to the machine. There must be clearance between the spout and the underside of the portafilter. Barista Essentials states that its own portafilters fit in all sizes. This is not a universal guarantee for other brands: if unsure, have the exact portafilter and spout clearance checked.

Advice from Geert-Jan the Barista Man

With over 10 years of experience in providing barista workshops at home, at businesses, and in Amsterdam, Geert-Jan is happy to share his advice.

Who is Geert-Jan?

From practice:

At De Barista Shop, Geert-Jan de Baristaman helps you choose tools based on the action you want to improve. With a tamping station, start with two questions: is the portafilter stable, and can you tamp straight down comfortably? Checking this is more useful than simply pressing harder.

My advice:

Start with compatibility, then your technique. If the portafilter rests without tilting and the spout has sufficient clearance, you can practise tamping straight down in a controlled way. The silver finish does not change that. If you then want to understand why the flavour varies, use a consistent coffee dose, espresso yield and brewing time.

Here's how to use this in your coffee routine

A barista tool only really works well when you know where it fits into your routine.

Get into the routine:

After distributing the ground coffee, before locking the portafilter into the machine.

Usage:

After distributing the ground coffee, before locking the portafilter into the machine.

Geert-Jan's tip:

Follow the same sequence for every shot. Weigh your coffee, distribute the grounds, tamp straight and check the rim. When dialing in, change one variable at a time. This makes it easier to see whether your adjustment actually helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zilveren Barista Essentials tamping station met zwarte mat en uitsparingen voor portafilter en tamper

Where can I order the silver tamping station?

The button takes you to the silver version at Barista Essentials, where you complete your purchase. Barista Essentials handles payment, delivery, returns and any applicable right of withdrawal under its current terms. Check the price and availability there before ordering.

Do I pay extra when using De Barista Shop's link?

No. De Barista Shop may earn a commission when you order through the link; you pay nothing extra. Current prices and terms are available at Barista Essentials.

Will my original Sage or De’Longhi portafilter fit?

According to Barista Essentials, original Sage and De’Longhi portafilters usually have too little clearance between the spout and the underside. Do not assume they will fit. Have your exact portafilter checked before ordering. The supplier does state that its own Barista Essentials portafilters fit in all sizes.

How do I use a tamping station to tamp straight?

First check that the portafilter is supported level and securely. Then distribute the grounds and hold your tamper straight above the coffee bed. Press down in a controlled motion without moving sideways. The station supports your portafilter, but it does not automatically correct your posture or distribution.

When should I improve something else first?

If you can already tamp steadily, or if your dose, bean freshness and grind size still vary significantly. Start with a consistent routine and learn to monitor your extraction. A tamping station provides support; it is not essential for good espresso.
